BharatPe provides merchants with a QR code to accept customer payments. Merchants are notified of these payments through:

Situation
Every merchant currently receives payment notifications through BharatPe’s WhatsApp channel.
The existing cost model is based on user conversations, which amounts to approximately ₹2 lakh per month.
However, effective 1st July 2025, Meta has revised its pricing model from per conversation to per message. Under this new structure, the projected cost will escalate to ₹50 million per month, or ₹600 million annually. This represents a 2,400% increase, which is not sustainable for the business.
To address this challenge, the only viable path forward is to discontinue WhatsApp notifications for payment alerts and explore innovative, cost-effective alternatives to ensure merchants continue receiving timely payment updates.
The initiative is expected to avoid an estimated annual cost of ₹60 crore (approximately $600 million). In addition, it has the potential to create new revenue opportunities for the company. Given its importance, this is a time-critical project with a delivery timeline of four weeks.
Problem statement
Eliminate the dependency of WhatsApp Notification for regular payments notifications & find the scalable and long-term solutions for merchants which is simple and intuitive as WhatsApp

Push Notifications
when a payment is received through BharatPe, the app can immediately send a push notification to the merchant’s phone to inform them—similar to how you get alerts for new emails, messages, or reminders.
👉 Key characteristics:
Delivered instantly to the user’s device.
Appears on the lock screen, notification bar, or banner.
Doesn’t require the user to manually open the app to check updates.
Typically free for the company to send (unlike SMS or WhatsApp messages).
this is most common notifications feature used to send messages to User with app. User receives notifications on their devices and show up on device instant.
If device is locked it stacked up on lock screen. It disappears once read by user.
A push notification is a short message or alert sent directly to a user’s device (like a smartphone, tablet, or computer) by an app or website — even when the app or site isn’t actively open.

Sticky - Notifications
A sticky notification is a type of notification on a device that remains visible in the notification panel until the user takes a specific action, such as dismissing it manually or interacting with it. Unlike regular notifications that can disappear after being tapped or swiped away, sticky ones are "pinned" so they stay in place.

Voice Notifications
Voice notifications are audio alerts or spoken messages that inform a user about events, updates, or incoming communications. Instead of a visual pop-up on a screen, the information is conveyed through spoken words.
Convenience: Get information quickly without interrupting your current task.

Full screen
Full-screen notifications, as the name suggests, are alerts that take over the entire display of your device, temporarily obscuring whatever you were doing. They are designed to demand immediate attention and often require an explicit action from the user to dismiss them or interact with them.
Characteristics:
Takes Over the Entire Screen: Unlike banner notifications or badges, they don't just appear at the top or bottom; they replace the current content entirely.
Simplicity: By removing other distractions, the user can focus solely on the notification.
Downsides/Considerations:
Intrusive: They can be highly disruptive, especially if they pop up frequently or at inconvenient times
Context Loss: They completely obscure your current task, forcing you to lose context.

WA messages
This is Chargeable - ₹25–30 per month
Some merchants use WhatsApp to receive payment notifications. We will continue providing this service, but at a subsidised rate of ₹25–30 per month, which will be automatically deducted from the merchant’s settlement account at the time of opt-in.
Merchants can opt out of the service at any time. Those who stay opted in will continue receiving payment notifications on WhatsApp as before.

SMS notifications
An SMS notification is a short text message sent to a user’s phone via the Short Message Service (SMS), typically to share important updates, alerts, or reminders.
Works without internet.
Cost per SMS for businesses.
The Google Messages app (often just called Messages by Google) is Google’s official text messaging app for Android phones. It’s the default SMS and RCS (Rich Communication Services) app on most Android devices.
What it does:
SMS/MMS: Sends and receives regular text and picture messages.
RCS messaging (like iMessage or WhatsApp, but built into the phone):
Typing indicators (“… is typing”).
Read receipts.
High-quality photo/video sharing.
Group chats with modern features.
Google is pushing RCS through Messages to replace traditional SMS/MMS with a more modern, internet-powered standard (similar to WhatsApp or iMessage).

Widgets -
In an Android device, a widget is a small, interactive element you can place on your home screen to quickly view or use features from an app without opening the app itself.
Key Traits of Widgets:
Live, glanceable info: Shows real-time updates.
Interactive: Some let you take quick actions (pause music, check tasks, turn on/off Wi-Fi, etc.).
Customizable: Many widgets can be resized or styled to fit your home screen.
Why useful?
Saves time by showing important info at a glance.
Provides shortcuts for frequent actions.
